Malin native Celine Byrne is in the thick of the action of the Roller Derby World Cup while playing for Team Denmark.

The global showdown kicked off yesterday in Innsbruck, Austria, featuring 49 powerhouse teams, from Team USA to Japan and Team Ireland.

Having moved to Copenhagen two decades ago, Celine has been part of the fast-paced, full-contact sport of roller derby since she joined the Copenhagen team in 2015.

Better known on the track as ‘Lady MacDeath’, the Inishowen woman plays a crucial role as a ‘blocker’.

Team Denmark faced a tough opening game yesterday, falling to the Black Diaspora Roller Derby with a score of 246 to 112.

They are back on the track today to take on the Jewish Roller Derby, a diverse team composed of Jewish skaters from various countries and cultures.

Roller Derby is a volunteer-run sport and everyone on the national team dedicates their own time and finances to compete in the global championship.
