MAN REMANDED IN CUSTODY AFTER HIGH SPEED CHASE WITH GARDAI

October 18, 2012

A young man stole a car and was involved in a high-speed chase with Gardai for more than 30 kms, a court has heard.

Cathal Dunleavy, 23, from, Glenvar, Kerrykeel, appeared at Letterkenny District Court today charged with 16 different offences.

They include fifteen charges of speeding and another charge of stealing a car.

The court heard how a large number of Garda cars had been involved in the incident which started at Mountain Top in Letterkenny in the early hours of this morning and ended at Glenvar in Fanad.

Garda Inspector Kevin Gately told the court the subsequent pursuit took place over a considerable time and distance.

The car, which Dunleavy was driving, eventually crashed and is a write-off.

Dunleavy appeared in court wearing jeans and a t-shirt and was in handcuffs.

Garda Inspector Kevin Gately told the court that he was strongly opposed to bail.

He also told the court that there would be more serious charges coming before the courts.

He said Gardai were opposed to bail because of the seriousness of the case and the danger Dunleavy posed to himself, the Gardai and the general public.

He also felt there was the danger that Dunleavy would not appear in court if granted bail.

“I cannot impress upon the court enough our serious objection to bail,” he said.

Solicitor for Dunleavy, Donagh Cleary, said there was no evidence to suggest this.

Judge Paul Kelly said he was not granting bail to Dunleavy and remanded him in custody until next Monday, October 22nd.
