CULTURE NIGHT DONEGAL DAILYGet set for a cultural extravaganza across the county tonight with music, lights and drama to celebrate a night of free, family-friendly events for Culture Night.

Bring the kids along to Central Library in Letterkenny to listen to the Children’s String Orchestra at 6pm for a little Bach and Grieg.

Don’t forget to check out 400 years of the history of the North West in a snappy, fun-filled piece of theatre at Donegal County Museum with ‘Planters, Paupers & Rebels’.

Wrap up warm and bring a torch for the fantastic Loinnir Sculpture Trail at Letterkenny Town Park created by the Gaeltacht-based artists, An Cosán Glas.

The trail will showcase a collection of brand new works created by the group which was premiered at their annual night time show at Machaire Rabhartaigh on July 19 and 20 last.

More than 4,000 people enjoyed the event over the two nights.

Artists featured this year will include Deirdre Ní Bhraoinain, Seamus Kennedy, Annjo Carr, Ewan Berry, Caoimhín Mac Aoidh, Mickey McFadden, Billy Wynter ( Cornwall ), Leanne McLaughlin, Aoife Valley, Tim Johnson ( Isle of Wight) and Máire Ní Fhearraigh.

There’s a chance to join in workshops for carnival skills, face painting and flag making at the Loft Youth Project for young people aged 12-18.

Chill out with the Errigal Groove Orchestra who will be performing at An Grianan Theatre at 6pm and then nip across the road to Ross Fine Art Gallery to view the works of leading Irish and international artists including Basil Blackshaw, Sean Scully and many more.

Check out the outdoor film screenings of locally made short films, animations and videos at the Artworks Picture Framing site on the Port Road from 6pm -9pm.

The Blue Ribbon Performing Arts School also has a fabulous line-up of solo and choral singing, dance routines in popular, hip hop, Irish and contemporary styles as well as the Relay for Life Choir and the Blue Ribbon London Tour Group. You’ll find them at An Grianan Theatre from 7.15pm.

Unknown-2In Magheraroarty, Vernacular architecture specialist Fidelma Mullane discusses the built heritage features of Teach Mhicí Mhic Gabhann.

The story of Micí Mac Gabhann (1865-1948) will be recalled and there will be music and song by Éist, a traditional group of young local musicians.

You can enjoy light refreshments while you learn about the cultural heritage, traditional architecture and emigration from west Donegal. That starts at 8.30pm.
