Election candidate Christy Galligan has claimed that all successful candidates should sign up to a Code of Conduct/ Councillor Charter.council chamber donegal daily

He says this Code of Conduct would outline the responsibilities of, or proper practices for, an individual, party within the chamber.

“Over the past number of years the Council Chamber has been constantly disrupted by internal arguments between councillor’s which became personal at times and therefore work that should have been carried out wasn’t.

“This type of internal bickering must stop. As elected members of the Council we must serve the people of this County and we must show proper leadership,” he said.

This Code of Conduct/Councillor’s Charter which all Councillor’s would sign up to would ensure the following;

1) That everyone within the Chamber will be treated with respect.

2) That no personal animosity will be leveled against any member of the Chamber.

3) That as elected members of the Council the public will receive a competent and professional service.

4) That the Council meeting will be open and transparent to the Public and the Press.

5) That each Councillor will make available what he/she has achieved, on a quarterly basis, on the Council website.

6) That each Councillor is accountable for his/her period while elected to the Council.

7) That all who attend Council meetings will be free from sexual or other harassment.

8) That everyone within the Chamber will be shown respect based on cultural background and language tradition.

He added that breaches of the Code could lead to elected members being penalised by exclusion from the Chamber for a defined period, fines or reduction in speaking time.
