Shay Given scores bizarre own goal as Stoke fall to defeat against Everton

FOOTBALL: Shay Given scored a bizarre own goal as his Stoke City side fell to a 1-0 defeat away to Everton this afternoon.

Given saved the penalty from Leighton Baines, and pushed the ball onto the post, but it rebounded of the back of his head and into the net.

It was cruel misfortune for Given, who had made an initial great save, but there was nothing he could do about the freak ricochet.

Given has the been the No.1 choice for Mark Hughes’s side since the Premier League began a fortnight ago.

Republic of Ireland captain and Everton star Seamus Coleman missed the clash with Stoke – as he continues his rehabilitation from injury.

Coleman is unlikely to feature in both Ireland’s friendly against Oman on Wednesday, and their World Cup qualifier against Serbia on September 5th.
