There is widespread sadness across the county following the death of former Donegal Person of the Year Hugh Gallagher.

The 92 year old Carrigart man passed away at Letterkenny University Hospital.

Hugh will be well-kwown to many from his tremendous contribution to athletics where he was a member of Milford Athletics Club.

Despite his generous years, Hugh will be remembered for still competing in the Irish Masters Athletics Championships as recently as last year.

Indeed not only did he compete but Hugh, who was awarded a Civic Reception by Donegal County Council, won four gold medals at the event in Tullamore.

During his remarkable career in which he competed at various disciplines including the long jump, javelin and shot putt, he won a total of 29 world gold medals, five silver and two bronze as well as numerous national titles.

Tributes have been flowing in for Mr Gallagher following his death.

Local Minister and fellow Carrigart man, Joe McHugh, said Hugh was a true gentleman and an outstanding example of all that can be achieved in life.

Mr Gallagher was predeceased by his late wife Rosemarie in 2015.

His remains are reposing at his home for funeral mass on Monday at the Church of St John the Baptist followed by burial.
