Barry McNamee has spoken of his pride after being confirmed as the new captain of Derry City.
The Ramelton man, who is back at the Brandywell after a season at Cork City, has been given the armband by new City boss Declan Devine.
It was Devine who gave McNamee his debut in the Candystripes in 2011.
In what is very much a new-look City team, Devine – who is back at the helm having been appointed as successor to Kenny Shiels – has chosen McNamee as his captain.
“It’s an honour,” McNamee said.
“When I was here before, Kevin Deery was captain and Declan was manager. Now, Declan is back as manager and Kevin is the assistant. It’s come full circle.
“I’ve played under Barry Molloy, Gerard Doherty, Ryan McBride, three great captains, and then ‘Deerso’ (Derry), four.
“I’ll take bits from them all and put my own stamp on it. At the end of the day, it’s not about me. It’s about us as a team, gelling and doing what we have to do to push Derry back up the table.”
