Sean McGoldrick looks for prized shot after latest win

Sean McGoldrick says he wants a title tilt by the close of this year.

The Welsh bantamweight, who has strong Donegal connections, defeated Sean Cairns on Saturday evening in London.

McGoldrick, whose father Liam is from Ballyshannon, extended his record to 8-0 with a 59-56 points win at the Copper Box Arena, on the same card as Jason Quigley defeated Mathias Eklund.

“The more rounds I can get, the better,” McGoldrick told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub.

This was meant to be eight rounds, but it was changed at the last minute. It’s important to get six very hard rounds and that’s going to be massive.

“They haven’t given me exactly what’s next for me yet, but they want to push me on soon. Hopefully there’ll be titles this year, but it’s one step at a time.”

McGoldrick’s last fight was a win against Dylan McDonagh in August.

The 27-year-old has since changed trainer and now works under Jamie Moore. McGoldrick is a stablemate of the likes of Rocky Fielding, Carl Frampton and Conrad Cummings at the VIP Gym in Wigan.

He said: “Jamie is a great guy. Everything is going really well. I had a lot of ring rust. I was out of the ring for seven months, so I was a bit off the boil. I can learn a lot from now on.”

McGoldrick had success on the scorecards after a tough scrap with Cairns.

McGoldrick rocked the Liverpudlian with a sharp right hand and it was a contest that was in the mix right until the result was announced.

McGoldrick said: “It was a tough fight.

“We knew that in taking it. He was a winning opponent and a good opponent. He was very big. It was a good learning experience for me. That will help me for the future.

“My performance was okay. I did some good things and some things I wouldn’t be so happy with. I’ll get back in the gym, keep learning and get back at it.”

Sharing the bill with Quigley heightened the support for McGoldrick at ringside, among those cheering his name the President of the Donegal Boxing Board, Peter O’Donnell.

McGoldrick said: “I have great support from Donegal. I’m proud of my family rules.”

McGoldrick previously boxed under the same Finn Valley ABC banner as Quigley and he was back out in the arena to cheer Quigley to a second round stoppage of Eklund.

He said: “Jay was brilliant. He was punch perfect.”
