The Summer Stars Reading programme was launched in Buncrana Community Library yesterday.

Cathaoirleach Cllr Rena Donaghey was in attendance saying Donegal County Council is delighted to launch this fantastic literacy programme today in the newly-refurbished Buncrana Community Library.

She said “I am delighted that our libraries are beginning to re-open on a phased basis, as the library service is a vital community service and one that has been greatly missed over the last few months.”

Library staff & local families were also in attendance.

Donna Cavanagh, Senior Executive Librarian said: “Summer Stars is a great way to keep your child’s literacy levels high during the summer holidays. We have put together a fun, interactive and enjoyable programme for children to enjoy during July and August. We will be offering a browse and borrow service from 5 of our libraries in Buncrana, Bundoran, Central, Twin Towns and Leabharlann Phobail Ghaoth Dobhair so children will have the opportunity to visit a library again”

Donegal libraries are eager to connect with our young readers again and there will be plenty of activities including arts & crafts for pavement pick-up in Buncrana Library, Bundoran Library and Central Library (Letterkenny) every Tuesday at 11 a.m. from 7th July to 11th August; an online reading aloud bookclub for 4 weeks beginning Thursday 9th July at 11 a.m; online Storytelling of ‘I am Love’ by Terri McMenamin followed by yoga on Fridays 10th, 17th and 24th July at 11 a.m.

There will also be lots of online activities such as scavenger hunts, online quizzes and grammar slams. For more information visit www.donegallibrary.ie or visit our Facebook page.

All children throughout the country are invited to join the adventure and to enjoy the fun and pleasure of reading and writing over the summer. Summer Stars is non-competitive and every child who reads even one book is regarded as having completed the programme – and it’s all completely free!

This year, Summer Stars is also celebrating children’s imaginations by running a short story competition, An Unexpected Adventure. There are three age categories with great prizes for winners and runners-up.
