Golf – Kevin Monaghan wins Buncrana Hearts Open

THERE was a fantastic turnout over the two days for the Buncrana Hearts Open Stableford and the course as usual was in excellent condition with the greens running true and fast.

The scoring over the two days was also fantastic with 35 % of the players participating shooting level par nett or better.

The big prizes seem to bring out the big scores and last weekend was no exception with any of the top 7 scores capable of winning on any other weekend. However the player that topped the lot and took his maiden victory in the process was Kevin Monaghan (26) who played his best golf to date to shoot a tremendous 48 points.

Kevin now sees his handicap reduced by 4 shots and if he continues in this form he will see his handicap come tumbling down.

In second place with 47 points was the big hitting Sean T Murphy who was very unfortunate to see this score beat.

The full results of the Buncrana FC Open Stableford played Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th August are as follows; 1st Kevin Monaghan (26) 48 points, 2nd Sean T. Murphy (15) 47 points, Gross Fíachra O’ Flaherty (5) 64 Gross, 3rd David Mc Ginley (9) 45 points, Best Day Shane Dillon (11) 44 points, Visitor James Mc Hugh (6) 34 points, Back 9 Paul Mc Daid (10) 23 points , Non Golfer Ryan Wade (24) 43 points, Nearest The Pin Brian Bradley – CSS 64 / 38points.

Buncrana Credit Union Teams of 3 Rumble

THE midweek competition last week was the Buncrana Credit Union Open Teams of 3 Rumble played Monday 3rd, Tuesday 4th & Wednesday 5th August.

The challenge for all the competitors was  “Amen Corner” (the 240 yard Par 3 Third – the Short but Very Tricky 300 yard Par 4 Fourth and The Mighty Monster Par 5 Fifth) proving to be the make or break holes.

Teams were struggling to come to terms with all 3 scores to count at this difficult run of holes and these holes took no prisoners over the 3 days with the majority of teams having at least one blank hole over this stretch.

There will be some hard luck stories told with ‘only’ or ‘if’ I had of hit this club or that club I wouldn’t have blank the 3rd or the 4th or maybe the 5th and that would have made all the difference.

However all the scores are in and the counting is done and the team that can take the honours of having tamed amen corner is Pauric O’ Flaherty (3), Paul Mc Nicholl (13) and Ciaran Doherty (20).

This combination played some steady and consistent golf between them and also have the accolade of not blanking a hole over the 44 holes played which in itself is no mean achievement. In 2nd place was the formidable team of Jim Caldwell (11), James Caldwell (11) and Brendan Crummey (16) with 102 points on a b.o.t. Best day went to Paul Burns (19), Ciaran Mc Dermott (20) & Anthony Coyle (20) 97 points b.o.t.

Up Coming Competitions:

Wednesday 12th & Thursday 13th August – The Cottage Bar Open Stableford

Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th August– The Michael Fitzpatrick Memorial Open Stroke

Wednesday 19th & Thursday 20th August – Duffy’s Pharmacy Open Stableford

There is a timesheet in operation so book early to avoid any disappointment – contact details are 0749362279.
