Another new mural is set to be painted in Letterkenny to remember days gone by.
The Letterkenny Community Heritage Group has gained permission from the council to place a mural at the site of the Old Mart, opposite Scoil Mhuire gan Smál.
Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh revealed that the wall mural will depict the history of the area and an artist has already been appointed for the piece.
“Hopefully it would be a piece of work that would enhance that area,” Cllr Kavanagh told councillors at this week’s Letterkenny-Milford MD meeting.
Talented artist Kevin Gallagher and his son Kevin Jnr will take up the project. The duo are currently working on a mural depicting Letterkenny’s railway heritage on the side of the Station House Hotel. This artwork is set to be officially unveiled when fully completed in the coming weeks.
The Old Mart car park was formally renamed as Hugh Duffy car park last year in memory of one of Letterkenny’s most well known residents. The late Hugh Duffy, a native of Galway, was a teacher at St. Eunan’s College who took a great interest in the ongoing development of Letterkenny and played an active part in keeping the site of the Old Mart in Council ownership.
