DONEGAL County Council buildings lit up purple yesterday in support of World Prematurity Day.

Each year on November 17, World Prematurity Day is observed to raise awareness of preterm birth and the concerns of the families worldwide.

Purple is the official colour for the day.

Donegal County Council, to aid the Irish Neonatal Health Alliance in heightening awareness, illuminated a number of buildings.

The County House in Lifford went purple as did some of Donegal County Council’s public service centres across the county.

World Prematurity Day celebrates all the babies who are born too soon, too small and too sick.

Approximately 15 million babies are born preterm each year, accounting for about one in 10 of all babies born worldwide.
