Man tells court he deeply regrets death of friend

July 21, 2021

A man has told a court that he deeply regrets the death of his friend who was killed in a freak accident.

Paul Dooher appeared at Letterkenny Circuit Court in Co Donegal where he pleaded guilty to the unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

The charge relates to an incident at Windyhall, Letterkenny on June 13th, 2020 in which another man Jason Haughey was killed when he was struck by a car.

Dooher (28) of Culdoire, Gortlee, spoke only to plead guilty when he appeared in court.

His barrister Shane Costelloe, SC, described the case as “unbelievably tragic.”

He added that there was no suggestion of dangerous driving but admitted that his client did leave the scene of an accident.

He added that Dooher wanted it to be known publicly that he deeply regretted the death of his friend.

“These things have a way of leaking into the public and he wants it to be known that he deeply regrets the death of his friend,” said Mr Costelloe.

Mr Costelloe added that his client had suffered considerably following the incident.

His relationship had broken down and he had suffered psychiatric issues also.

He requested a probation and welfare report and also a psychological report before the sentencing hearing.

Judge John Aylmer adjourned the case until next January for sentence.
