Motorist detected at 170km/h in Donegal avoids driving ban

August 1, 2021

A MAN detected driving at 170km/h on a busy Donegal road has avoided a driving ban.

Gardaí were operating a speed check on the dual carriageway section of the N13 road outside Letterkenny on June 19, 2021.

John Byrne (32), with an address at Monasterboice, was driving a red 171-registered Alfa Romeo at the time.

Byrne was stopped by Gardai and arrested when his speed was clocked at 4.40pm in the town land of Trimeragh.

The road in question is governed by a 100km/h speed limit.

“He got caught up and ‘gave it a go’ so to speak,” solicitor Mr Frank Dorrian told Letterkenny District Court.

Gardaí said Byrne was ‘unusually’ polite and co-operative.

The court heard that Byrne is a project manager who ‘travels all over the world’ for his work’.

Mr Dorrian said: “He spends his time going to and from airports so mobility is central to his future’.

A charge of dangerous driving was reduced to one of carless driving. Byrne was fined €200 by Judge Paul Kelly and a disqualification was not imposed.
