Government to meet today to discuss hospitality sector fears

The Government will meet later today over fears that the hospitality sector could yet again be plunged into crisis.

There are growing fears that pubs and restaurants could suffer again if any kind of lockdown comes into place over the Christmas period.

Already bars and restaurants have been hit with a midnight curfew.

One Letterkenny bar owner told Donegal Daily that he feels it is only a matter of time before bars are closed down again.

“If I was a betting man I’d place a large bet on it. I feel with the numbers increasing so much that it’s only a matter of time.

:I feel they are easing us in slowly by introducing the midnight curfew. They’ll introduce another measure shortly and I wouldn’t be surprised if they close us by Christmas,” he said.

The Cabinet Sub Committee on Economic Recovery will also consider the ongoing Covid supports amid continued concern about the rise in Covid case numbers and increasing pressure on hospitals.

The Government and its public health advisers have been reasserting the message for people to reduce their social contacts.

While that is believed to be having an effect, public health officials say the spread of Covid in the community is at a worrying level.
