Kilmacrennan man who abused hospital staff appears in court

July 21, 2023

A Kilmacrennan man appeared in court after becoming abusive to nurses at Letterkenny University Hospital and Gardai.

Joe Toye was before Letterkenny District Court following the incident at the Emergency Department of the hospital at 2.55am on April 1, 2023.

Details of the incident were relayed to the court by Sergeant Jim Collins, who outlined that Gardai received a report of a man being abusive to staff in LUH.

When medical staff removed an intravenous cannula from his hand, Toye became abusive and aggressive.

The accused, a 25-year-old from Ard na Glaise, Kilmacrennan, branded nurses and Gardai ‘dirty bastards’ and proceeded to say: ‘I’ll find out where you live. I will damage you.’

Toye told Gardai, who attended the scene: ‘I will sort you, fucking pigs’.

Sergeant Collins told the court that Toye apologised once he ‘became sober and normal’. “He said he should have known better,” Sergeant Collins said.

The court heard that Toye has 21 previous convictions, including for road traffic, theft and public order offences.

“He has apologised for it,” Toye’s solicitor, Mr Patsy Gallagher, said. “He is dealing with his demons from day to day.”

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham asked for the preparation of a probation and welfare report on Toye.

The case was adjourned until October 23, 2023.
