The family of a young Donegal man seriously injured in a road traffic accident in Florida have revealed he is making remarkable steps towards recovery but stressed he still has a long road to go.

Family and friends of Ardara man Daniel Gallagher feared the worst following the crash in Florida on December 29th last.

A fund launched to help the Gallagher family to fly to America and be with Daniel as well as to help with medical bills has so far reached more than €112,000.

But Daniel’s sister Fiona has tonight posted even better news as Daniel battles to get back on the road to recovery.

Fiona Gallagher revealed “We would like to update everyone on Daniel’s progress and to thank everyone for their overwhelming generosity.

“It will be three weeks this Friday the 19th since Daniels accident and everyday he is making slight progress. He is currently conscious, breathing without aid and attempting to speak, which is very positive.

“He is taking small steps in the right direction but still has a long road ahead. Your kindness has been of great comfort during this difficult time. Please continue to keep Daniel in your thoughts and prayers.”

Daniel is still being treated at Orlando Regional Medical Centre and is under constant 24 hour care by a team of doctors.

His fund remains open and all money will be used towards his care.

If anyone is not comfortable making a donation on Go Fund Me and wants to contact the committee they can do so on privately through the contact button on the Go Fund Me page.

“We thank you all sincerely for your support and prayers,: said the family.

Prayers were said at local masses for Daniel while get well wishes flowed in from across the county including Ardara GAA Club of which Daniel is a member.
