A major investigation is underway after a man was killed in an explosion at a homeless hostel in Dublin city centre.

The man, who was in his 30s and reportedly Eastern European, was fatally injured in the blast at Little Britain Street in Dublin 7 on Thursday afternoon.

The explosion was confined to one room within the property, and no one else was injured.

All other residents were evacuated from the premises and the scene was sealed off.

The precise cause of the explosion is currently under investigation by the Garda Technical Bureau with assistance from the Army bomb disposal technicians.

A controlled explosion was carried out last night following the incident.

A statement from the hostel operators said: “Our heart goes out to the service user who lost their life, as well as their family and service users who were in the building at the time.

“This was an isolated incident, confined to one room and no other service users were physically harmed in this incident. We wish to thank the emergency services, DRHE, and our NGO partners for their assistance in the emergency response.”

Sadly, a person has died following an incident in a building on Little Britain Street this afternoon.

Our thoughts are with the person’s family and friends at this difficult time
