Here are this week’s Raphoe community notes.

 

Raphoe Family Resource Centre CLG

Raphoe Family Resource Centre provide Computer and internet access, photocopying, CV preparation and weekly employment lists via email.  If you need any help on these areas, please call in to us or give us a call.  If you are interested in any of our following courses or programmes or would like to join in on any of our groups, please call in to see us or contact us on 0749145796 / 0873641503.

 

What would you like see in Raphoe FRC? 

With the beginning of a New Year, Raphoe Family Resource Centre are busy making plans for the months ahead and would love to hear your ideas! If there is any programme, course or activity you would like to participate in or want us to start, let us know.

 

Ireland through the years by ART

Come and join us and paint a scene/character/place from a time in Irish history that has inspired you.  Classes start on Wednesday 31st March 2024 for 8 weeks here at the Family Resource Centre with our expert tutor Marty! Classes cost €15.00, to book your place contact Marie on 0873641503/0749145796/ info@raphoefrc.ie. This course has been part funded by Donegal ETB Community Education Programme.

 

Craft classes

Adult arts & crafts class starting Thursday mornings 1st February from 10.30AM – 12.30 for 6 weeks.  Have fun in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere whilst trying out different crafting techniques! Little Smiles with Big Dreams Mother & Toddler Group

Raphoe Family Resource Centre’s Little Smiles with Big Dreams Toddler Group will return after the Christmas break on Wednesday 10th January 2024.  The group meet every Wednesday from 10.30am to 12 noon. A great way to increase your little one’s confidence and get to know others of similar age. Cost €2 per child. The group hosts fun activities and workshops throughout the year. Raphoe Men’s Shed

The Men’s Shed group meet every Thursday at 12 Noon in “The Shed”. The shed has now re-opened following the Christmas break.  If you have a few hours to spare why not come along and join in!  New members are always welcome for a cuppa in the shed!  For more info contact Marie on 0749145796/0873641503.

 

Family Support

As a parent or guardian, parenting is one of the most rewarding things you will ever do, however the Family Resource Centre recognises at times life throws up challenges and these can be overwhelming.  Some examples of the support we can offer; making routines, establishing boundaries and dealing with challenging behaviours.

The Family Resource Centre can help through listening ear, parenting programmes, one to one support, and a drop-in clinic to offer support on issues that are affecting home life.

We also provide sign posting or referrals to other services. For any further information please call Laura our Family Support Community Development Worker on 08733350658.

 

Raphoe Walking Group 

Raphoe Walking Group will continue to meet every Thursday morning at 10.30am, here in the FRC.  Come along and join the group for a walk and a cuppa!!

 

Seniors Alert Scheme

Raphoe Family Resource Centre is registered under Pobal’s Senior Alert Scheme to provide personal alarms to those over 65 years living alone for significant periods of time during the day, or is a carer to someone else in their household. The purpose of the scheme is to enable older persons of limited means to continue to live securely in their own homes with confidence, independence and peace of mind providing them with a free personal monitored alarm which can be worn as a pendant or around their wrist like a watch. S.T.A.R.T Project

Would you like to talk to someone about your concerns around drugs/alcohol? Free, confidential – non-judgemental service providing up to date information and practical supports, including CBT, Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness practices, Brief Solution Focus Therapy and the Smart Recovery Principles. Drop in Group/Individuals every Tuesday 10am-12pm in Raphoe Family Resource Centre. Letterkenny C.D.P is a community Development Project providing a Community Response to Alcohol/Drug misuse throughout Co. Donegal. We provide non-judgemental support guidance and education to drug/alcohol users, their families and the community. Contact our Outreach worker for the Finn Valley area, Karen Gallen on 087 388 5080

SMART Recovery

SMART recovery meeting beginning in the Finn Valley FRC on Wednesday 10th January 2024 from 2.30pm to 4pm, this is in addition to the Letterkenny meeting.  Contact Karen Gallen on 087 388 5080 for further information.

 

OTHER COMMUNITY NEWS 

 

Raphoe Community Playgroup 

Raphoe Community Playgroup enrolment forms are available from the playschool from 9am-5pm daily. Please come along and view our facilities on enrolment night.

 

Raphoe Boxing Club

Its all systems go again for 2024 at the local boxing club as the Club has now re-opened and Junior boxing classes take place on Monday & Wednesday nights from 6PM – 7PM and the senior boxing sessions on Mon, Wed & Fri nights from 7 – 8.30PM.  All new and former members are welcome along!

The club boxers Ryley Doherty and Jack Mc Elroy will compete in the national under 18 years championships in Dublin over the next 3 weekends and elite boxers Danny Duffy and Cathal Mc Laughlin will compete in the Ulster Elite Championships in Belfast from 16th – 19th January.  Boxers Danny Duffy and the “Blonde Bomber” Taylor Parke have both received nominations for the Donegal Sports Stars Awards taking place in the Mount Errigal Hotel, Letterkenny on Friday 26th January.

 

Volt House

The Volt House, Suile Centre has now re-opened after the Christmas Break, and all classes have resumed again.

Monday mornings, Yoga with Erin at 10am

Monday evenings Pilates with Sadie at 7pm

Monday evenings Tin Whistle with Christy from 7pm

Tuesday 7pm Yoga with Erin

Wednesday 5 -7pm Rinka with Eibhlin (Kids dance/exercise class)

Thursday Pilates with Sadie at 7pm

Friday from 10.30am Seniors Friday club (Tea, chat & Bingo). Everyone welcome.

We also have regular meetings of The Diamond Writers (writing group), and an active Book Club, as well as a ladies group, The Volt house Ladies who meet on a regular basis for fun activities, crafts, outings etc. New members always welcome. We have started work again in our effort to bring some new classes for 2024 and more details to follow.

We hope everyone had a very happy Christmas and we look forward to welcoming everyone back in 2024.

 

Big Brother Big Sister Programme

Big Brother Big Sister is again calling on adult volunteers to step forward and give just one hour a week to meet with a young person from age 8-18 for whom life may be a little challenging. Your support can make a real difference. We are currently looking for both male and female volunteers in the Letterkenny and surrounding areas. Age Action – Care & Repair, Volunteers needed

Age Action’s Care and repair does small DIY jobs, free of charge, for older people to help them maintain their homes and independence.  We are currently recruiting volunteers for this role who have skills in small repairs and home improvements, as well as their own basic tools and transport.  Care and repair volunteers can do minor home decorating, tack down carpets, change light bulbs, move furniture, hang pictures, basic gardening and much more! We are currently piloting the programme in Donegal and are looking for volunteers in the following areas: Letterkenny Stranorlar Drumkeen Raphoe Lifford Ballybofey Convoy.
