Glenties and Milford are holiday home hotspots

Two Donegal districts have Ireland’s highest percentage of holiday homes, according to CSO statistics.

More than a quarter of all houses in the areas of Glenties (28%) and Milford (26%) are holiday rentals, the Irish Independent reports today.

There’s been an 11% rise in holiday homes registered in Donegal since 2016. The figure stood at 12,485 in 2022.

A closer look per electoral division reveals that Bundoran Urban has the highest number of holiday homes at 610 units, followed by Rosguill (533) and Ards (506). Seaside areas of Dunfanaghy, Magheraclogher, Rutland, Rathmullan and Annagry also feature in the top 10.

In April 2022, 43,107 of homes were owner-occupied in Donegal, compared with 42,210 in April 2016. Homes rented from private landlords showed a 13% increase from 7,393 to 8,377.

Nationally, the housing stock grew by more than 5% from 2,003,645 in 2016 to 2,112,121 in 2022.
