A number of drivers have been arrested as Donegal Gardaí begin to ramp up their Bank Holiday roads operations.
High-visibility patrols and checkpoints are in place to try and curb the rise in road deaths seen in the last 18 months.
Gardaí say their focus is on “key lifesaver offences” including speeding, drink & drug driving and the non-wearing of seat-belts.
Letterkenny Gardaí arrested a driver in the early hours of this morning on suspicion of drug driving, after recording a positive cannabis test.
Another driver was arrested yesterday afternoon in the Letterkenny area, after they were found to be disqualified from driving. Their car was seized, and they were arrested and then released pending a court appearance.
A lorry was also seized following checks of lorries in the Letterkenny area, with Gardaí and the RSA aiming to detect potential defects in heavy articulated vehicles.
Gardaí in Ballyshannon have also issued several fines for a number of offences this weekend, including speeding, detectingcars having worn or unsuitable tyres, and also seizing a car that was found to not be taxed.
