A series of new traffic calming measures are being rolled out in Ramelton to address residents’ safety concerns.
Speeding has been a long-standing concern in the village.
New ramps are now on the way for Church Street and outside Cul Na Cille on Rectory Road to promote slower driving and safer crossings.
A new flashing speed sign has also been installed at the top of the Bridgend on the Milford Road.
The measures have been funded by Cllr Pauric McGarvey through the member’s infrastructure fund.
The Independent councillor said: “The road through Ramelton is the main artery from two major peninsulas leading to the main towns and sees major traffic daily travelling through.
“Following making representations, bringing this issue up in meetings I have been working with engineers to find solutions to the speed of cars coming from Milford into Ramelton.
“We have had a traffic survey done by DCC and the results spoke for themselves, something needed to be done, but unfortunately the answer was “no funding” which as you know from our MD meetings is a common answer. “
The new flashing speed sign for Bridgend will be installed next Friday 17th May, at a cost of €4,000 from Cllr McGarvey’s fund. A further €13,000 has gone to the ramps to slow traffic on Church Street and Rectory Road.
Cllr McGarvey said: “These measures were vital to ensure safety for everyone and make Ramelton a safer place.”
He added: “I am absolutely delighted to have these traffic calming measures coming to Ramelton following all the calls, messages, conversations & major concerns of Residents especially having only been co-opted into the council just over a year.”
