The funeral of the former Fianna Fail TD and Minister Mary O’Rourke is taking place today.

She passed away at the age of 87 last week.

O’Rourke had a four-decade stint in politics, becoming a key member in a number of Fianna Fail cabinets as a Minister for Education, Health and Public Enterprise.

Mary was also the Deputy Leader of Fianna Fail throughout the mid-nineties and early 2000s behind Bertie Ahern.

Her funeral mass is taking place at the Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Coosan, Athlone at midday today, with President Michael D Higgins one of the dignitaries scheduled to attend.
