Donegal-based Senator Eileen Flynn says she is making history twice after becoming the first Traveller elected to the Oireachtas.

Eileen, who lives in Ardara, has been elected onto the Administrative Panel.

Flynn first entered the Seanad in 2020 upon being nominated by the Taoiseach Michael Martin, becoming the first-ever Traveller woman to be a member of the Oireachtas.

Flynn had previously stood as a candidate for the Labour Panel in the 2020 Seanad election.

Speaking on her election yesterday, she said: “It’s not often you get to make history twice, but I am honoured to be elected to the 27th Seanad.

“I am humbled and overwhelmed by the support and encouragement. My goal as always is to fight for equality, social justice, equality of opportunity and to make Ireland an inclusive place for all. I’m grateful for everyone who has given me this opportunity to continue that work.”
