Two men have been charged over the discovery of four mortar bombs in a van in Derry on Sunday night.Mortar Bomb Van pic

The van – stopped by officers on the Letterkenny Road – had come from Donegal had its roof cut back so the mortars could be fired.

The men, aged 35 and 37, face charges of possession of explosives with intent to endanger life, possession of articles for terrorist purposes and conspiracy to cause an explosion.

Two other men, aged 31 and 37, have been released without charge.

The two men who have been charged are due to appear before Derry Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Police believe dissident republicans were within minutes of firing the mortars.

They said the mortars were “primed and ready to go”.

About 100 families had to leave their homes during the overnight alert.
