Fine Gael’s Joe McHugh TD and Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh have told Bus Éireann management that 21st century standards require full wheelchair accessibility for customers on its Dublin-Omagh-Letterkenny route.
Deputy McHugh said public transport users in the 21st century should be able to expect full wheelchair accessibility.
“Cavan, Donegal, Fermanagh, Monaghan and Tyrone are the only counties on this island that are not serviced by railway; it is very disappointing that Bus Éireann’s service connecting Letterkenny, Omagh and Dublin is not fully wheelchair accessible.
“I have asked the CEO of Bus Éireann, Mr Martin Nolan, to enhance the Letterkenny-Omagh-Dublin route with wheelchair lift facilities, and to address other deficiencies on the route. 21st century standards require that a person with a disability should be able to source a public transport connection between the northwest and the country’s capital city.”
Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh said Bus Éireann needs to upgrade its Letterkenny-Omagh-Dublin service.
“I am seeking the support of my colleagues on Letterkenny Town Council in contacting Bus Éireann on behalf as a Town Council to emphasise our support for a service enhancement. I have also asked Cllr Josephine Deehan to address this matter with Omagh District Council and with Bus Éireann.”
