“NICE & NEESY” WINS IT FOR P.J.
Making a welcome comeback to the winners’ enclosure on Wednesday 22nd was the club’s formidable single handicapper Dessie Ferry [8] who showed his intentions with an early birdie at 4th helping him record an outward nine of 37 gross shots, [one over par] and 21pts.
Following an uncharacteristic “blank” at the uphill par five 11th with another birdie at 12th, Dessie’s resilience gave him a finishing total of 40pts and a one point victory over his nearest rival.
Saturday 25th Open, despite being played in gale force winds and heavy, intermitten rainfall, was very keenly contested and taking top honour was the enduring P.J.Nee [12]. With a somewhat “topsy-turvy” front nine which included a double bogey at 9th, P.J. settled to record a birdie at 14th which helped him to an inward nine of 37 gross shots, [one over par], 23pts and an overall return of 40pts. Following closely in second place was Darragh Heaney [15] who, with a superb front nine of 24pts, must have been thinking of that top spot but a few disappointing scores on back nine, which included a “blank” at 18th, saw him lose out by that one point. In third place was club treasurer Mark G. Doherty [9] who, despite starting with a “blank” at 1st, birdied 11th for a 22pts back nine return and an overall 38pt finish to win out on a 3-way B.O.T.
On Sunday 26th, the clock was not the only thing to have changed back for the better known Irish winter weather came back with a vengeance which made Sunday’s score even more remarkable and pleasing to winner Shay Henry [14] who recovered from a bogey at 1st with a birdie at 2nd to record a front nine of 23pts and, playing steady handicap golf on back nine, came home with a winning total of 40pts.
Bank Holiday Monday 27th Open was again very keenly contested and it was Michael Forde [12] who came out on top of a 3-way B.O.T. Despite a rickety front nine which included a double bogey at 6th and a “blank” at 9th, Michael returned a fighting 21pts and an overall 39pts to take home first prize.
