A 52-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a Churchill man four years ago.

Samuel James Clarke from Magherahane, Raphoe was charged with the murder Seamus Doherty, 67 at his home at Drumacnoo, Churchill on June 17, 2012.

Clarke appeared at a siting of Buncrana District Court today before Judge James Faughan.

Detective-Inspector Pat O’Donnell  told the court how Clarke was arrested at his home yesterday at 8.55pm and brought him to Letterkenny Garda Station.

He was charged at 9.44pm last night and he replied ‘no comment’ to the charge.

Mr Clarke’s solicitor Donagh Cleary was granted legal aid in the matter and Judge Faughan directed the accused’s medical requirements for painkillers and eyedrops be accommodated in custody.

He remanded Clarke in custody to Harristown District Court tomorrow, Friday January 15 at 10.30am.

A number of the deceased’s relatives, who was a well-respected horse dealer, attended the hearing.
