Solicitor issues warning to public after driver fined for being uninsured 90 minutes before policy started

October 24, 2017

A woman has been fined for driving without insurance after being stopped by Gardai an hour and a half before her policy came into effect.

Shauna Hunter of 19 Emmet Park, Castlefin was detected by Garda Heaney at Foxes Glen, Milford at 7.30pm on January 26th 2017. However, her insurance was not in place until after 9pm on the same day.

Solicitor Patsy Gallagher said Ms Hunter (aged 36) had applied for insurance prior to driving the car and was told it was in place, but the certification said 9.15pm.

Ms Hunter, a full-time mother who also works part-time, believed genuinely to have the insurance in question, Mr Gallagher said.

Mr Gallagher said it was a lesson to all drivers to check exactly what time their policy kicked in at on the day in question.

“The interesting part in this is the cert starts on 9.15pm on 26th January and runs until 23.59 on 25th January 2018 so she is not getting a full year” Mr Gallagher said.

Judge Paul Kelly said it didn’t matter that Ms Hunter had applied for the insurance, as confirmation was required before driving.

Judge Kelly issued a fine of €200 for driving without insurance.
