As part of ‘Culture Night’, the County Donegal Heritage Office will be hosting a built heritage walk in Letterkenny with Colm Murray, Architecture Officer with The Heritage Council on Friday, September 21 starting at the Central Library, Lower Main Street at 6.30pm.
This short walking tour entitled ‘Connecting with Letterkenny’s Historic Streetscape’ will encourage participants explore the town’s historic buildings and streetscapes, and in this the European Year of Cultural Heritage to ‘make a connection’ with its built heritage.
Drawing on the stories these buildings tell, built heritage archives and historical photographs, Colm will identify clues to the development of Letterkenny’s built environment.
Before joining The Heritage Council, Colm Murray worked with the National Monuments Section of the Office of Public Works on the conservation of sites in state care. He also worked as an architectural heritage advisor with Dúchas, the Heritage Service, and undertook surveys of Letterkenny and an interim survey of County Donegal for the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage. He has also worked in private architectural practice in Dublin and Portugal in the past.
The walk will start at the Central Library, Lower Main Street, Letterkenny, proceed along the Main Street and finish at the County Museum at 7:45 p.m. leaving participants free to enjoy the numerous other events taking place in Letterkenny for ‘Culture Night’.
These include historical re-enactments, heritage open houses, exhibitions, live music, film screenings, literary events, behind-the-scenes library tours, intercultural celebration, workshops, artistic performances, dance, choir recitals and comedy.
