Drugs charges for man who broke Covid lockdown to pier jump

June 23, 2020

A DERRYMAN who went pier jumping in Donegal during the Covid-19 lockdown has appeared in court on drug charges.

Daniel Smith (21) of 61 Marianus Park, Derry, was stopped by Gardaí at a Covid-19 checkpoint at Port Road, Letterkenny on May 30, 2020.

Gardaí detected a strong smell of cannabis from the Peugeot 206 being driven by Smith and searched the vehicle under the misuse of drugs act.

Cannabis to the value of €40 was found in a bag in the car.

Smith, who has no previous convictions, made admissions. He appeared in court with his mother and was, said his solicitor Mr Frank Dorrian, embarking on a carpentry apprenticeship.

Smith told Judge Paul Kelly that he had been in Rathmullan for pier jumping on the day in question.

“You weren’t supposed to do that,” Judge Kelly said. “Travel restrictions were in place.”

Smith, who made no reply, was ordered to pay €150 to the Letterkenny Youth and Community Club.
