Careless driving rap for man who swerved car on Letterkenny Main Street

July 20, 2021

A MAN who swerved his car on Letterkenny’s Main Street has been convicted of careless driving.

Letterkenny District Court heard the case of Gavin Doherty (24), of Callan Drumkeen.

Doherty was before the court charged over the incident at 12.24am on June 26, 2021.

Sergeant Gerard Dalton said the accused was observed exiting the junction at the Market Square, driving a grey Corsa, before turning right onto Main Street.

Sgt Dalton said Doherty swerved across the Main Street, entering parking spaces on either side of the road.

Doherty was subsequently arrested for the offence and conveyed to Letterkenny Garda Station.

“Stupidity more than anything and possibly showing off,” Sgt Dalton said.

Mr Rory O’Brien, solicitor for Doherty, said: “He swerved too quickly. He does accept that there were people on the footpath, but this manoeuvre was the extent of it. He was fully co-operative.”

Accepting the accused’s guilty plea for careless driving, Judge Deirdre Gearty fined Doherty €200, giving him five months to pay.

Judge Gearty said: “It’s lucky that there was not a worse scenario in the circumstances.”
