The EU farmer protest is set to branch into Donegal this evening as farmers plan to line the hard shoulder of the Letterkenny Dual Carriageway with tractors.
The protest, announced by the Donegal IFA, has been described as a “show of solidarity with farmers across the EU”.
Farmer protests are sweeping the European Union in opposition to rising costs, taxes and regulations.
French farmers blocked the highways to Paris earlier this week, while angry workers brought routes to Brussels to a standstill today ahead of a summit of European Union leaders.
The Donegal IFA says it does not intend to obstruct the public with its demonstration, which is scheduled for 7pm from the Manor Roundabout into Letterkenny. They said they plan to drive tractors only and no additional machinery will be used.
Donegal IFA public relations officer Tom Boyd said: “The message is in solidarity with farmers across Europe who are protesting against excessive EU regulation coming from Europe and how it is being implemented by Governments. Enough is enough.”
Boyd explained the issues faced in the continent are shared in Ireland, such as: “The EU Green Deal/Farm to Fork policies for the moving of the CAP away from supporting food production, overly complicated schemes leading to late payments, Nitrates derogation loss, the nature restoration law, the proposed Mercosur trade deal.”
