Two men are to appear in court today charged in connection with a fire which caused up to half a million euro in damage.

Paul McGinley, 30, and Owen McFadden, 40, will appear at Letterkenny District Court, to faces charges in connection with the blaze at an underground carpark off Letterkenny’s Main Street on Thursday morning last.

Nine cars were destroyed and two businesses suffered damage as a result of the blaze which started at 2am.

Dozens of families had to be evacuated from an upstairs apartment block during the fire which sent smoke billowing through the building.

One man was hospitalised as a result of the blaze but has since been released.

A full forensic examination of the scene is still ongoing.

McGinley, from Glen Hola, Gortahork and McFadden, from Falcarragh, both face ten charges each – one of burglary and nine of criminal damage.

Both have been remanded in custody since being charged with the offences during separate court appearance earlier last week.

Garda Inspector Goretti Sheridan said more serious charges are expected to be brought before the court.
