THE INISHOWEN YOUTH LEAGUE’S interest in the FAI Youth Inter-League Challenge Cup ended this afternoon with defeat to Limerick at the semi-final stage.

A Conor Coughlan brace put the visitors two in front and although Bart Wesolowski pulled one back for the Inishowen side, it wasn’t to be. Limerick, over the course of the contest, were deserving winners having had Shane Kelly sent off just after the hour-mark. But Inishowen saw their goalscorer Wesolowski dismissed as both teams finished with 10 men.
Limerick created three decent chances before going in front. First of all, Shane Kelly headed wide and then Coughlan almost got in. And following a goalmouth scramble, Dylan Sheehan saw his header cleared off the line by Adam Duffy.
The breakthrough came on 35 minutes and from an Inishowen perspective, it was certainly an avoidable concession.
A short kick-out from Ciaran Bradley wasn’t really on and Coughlan nipped in ahead of Brendan Doherty to shoot the opening goal.
Inishowen were somewhat aggrieved with the concession as goalkeeper Bradley was penalised for picking up a back pass, which had in fact come from a tackle on halfway by Adrian D Doherty. And although the indirect free-kick came to nothing, it was from the resultant goal kick that Limerick scored from.
Limerick doubled their advantage seven minutes into the second half when a cross by Shane Donegan was headed back across goal by Killian Maloney for Coughlan to volley home from six yards.
Six minutes later Coughlan shot wide to deny himself the hat-trick. Then, Kelly was sent off for a foul and abusive language on 60 minutes.
Then, a minute later, Inishowen got back into the contest when Wesolowski hammered home after a headed centre from Brendan Doherty.
Wesolowski was sent off on 67 minutes for a second yellow card and neither team created a chance of note thereafter.
