A major search operation took place on Lough Swilly last night following the sighting of an empty kayak.
A green kayak was reported in the water on Wednesday evening at around 6pm. Two Lough Swilly RNLI Lifeboats and the Rescue 118 helicopter were tasked by Malin Head Coast Guard to search the area in case any casualties were overboard.
An urgent post was shared on social media in a bid to find the kayak owner.
The mission had a positive outcome when a member of the public contacted Lough Swilly RNLI to claim the kayak.
The search was then stood down.
“We would like to thank the crew of the Lough Swilly Ferry, Rescue 118 and the general public for sharing an earlier post which helped locate the owner,” said a spokesperson for Lough Swilly RNLI.
“If you’re in difficulty or see someone in or on the water in trouble please dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.”
