Donegal ETB Golf: Deirdre delivers in Dunfanaghy

Play finally resumed for the Donegal ETB Golf Society with the second outing of Captain Jim McGlynn’s impressive looking roster taking place in Dunfanaghy Golf Club.

A day that started out in glorious autumn sunshine soon saw the heavens open and make things that little bit more difficult for the healthy attendance of 28 members, including several welcome new additions.

Although the wet conditions were a challenge for the golfers, the pristine nature of the course, the greens in particular, meant that scoring was still of a high standard.  When all the wet cards were worked through afterwards in the sanctuary of the clubhouse, it was last year’s Captain, Deirdre O’ Toole, who emerged victorious with an excellent score of 39pts.  Deirdre was delighted with her maiden victory of the year and with this win served notice that she will be one of the real contenders for Golfer of the Year in 2022.

Hot on her heels on the day, and already taking a commanding lead in the overall standings, was four-time winner Paddy McDaid.  The Finn Valley College golfer posting a very impressive back nine to claim the runner-up spot on 38pts.  Third place went to the evergreen Alex Harkin who shot 37pts still off an impressively low handicap of 14.  Marcel McCafferty was unfortunate to be pipped into fourth place on B.O.T. after an impressive showing.

Our retired members prize was won by Buncrana stalwart Sean Murphy on 33pts and the Category Four prize was claimed by new member John McIvor on 34pts.  After such a long wait for the second outing of Jim McGlynn’s pandemic affected tenure, attention now quickly turns to the next outing which will be held in Portsalon Golf Club on Saturday October 16th.

Results for Dunfanaghy outing-

1st– Deirdre O’ Toole 39pts; 2nd– Paddy McDaid 38pts; 3rd– Alex Harkin 37pts b.o.t.; 4th– Marcel McCafferty 37pts.  Retired member- Sean Murphy 33pts; Category IV winner- John McIvor 34pts.

Overall standings (after 2 outings)

1st– Paddy McDaid 48pts; 2nd– Deirdre O’ Toole 30pts; tied 3rd– Paddy Kelly & Alex Harkin 28pts
